I’ll never forget the sound of that first crack. It was a cold February morning, and I was finally enjoying the luxury of my newly finished kitchen. The radiant heat was humming along beautifully until I heard a sharp, sickening snap from beneath the island. I looked down, and my heart sank. A hairline fracture … Read more
I stood there, hands on my hips, staring at what was supposed to be a glassy, smooth subfloor ready for some high-end tile. Instead, it looked like a chemistry experiment gone wrong. Tiny pinholes and bubbles were everywhere, mocking the hours I’d spent on prep. I’d followed the bag instructions to a T, or so … Read more
I remember staring at my outdated, peach-colored kitchen tiles back in 2018, holding a box of beautiful luxury vinyl planks and thinking, “How hard could it be to just lay these right on top?” I was tired, the budget was tight, and I just wanted that modern look. So, I skipped the prep. Within a … Read more
I still remember the sinking feeling in my gut when I walked into my basement and heard a hollow ‘crunch’ under my boots. Just two weeks earlier, I had poured what I thought was a flawless layer of self-leveling compound over an old, battleship-gray painted floor. I was proud of it. But as I stood … Read more

I stood there with a pry bar in my hand, watching my $400 investment in self-leveling compound pop off the garage floor in giant, brittle sheets. It was absolutely gut-wrenching. I had done everything by the book—or so I thought. I had swept, I had vacuumed, and I had even applied a high-end primer. But … Read more
I stood there with my hands on my hips, looking at a floor that was supposed to be flat but looked more like a series of frozen waves. It was my first big renovation project, and I’d followed the bag instructions to a T—or so I thought. The ‘self-leveling’ compound I’d poured was currently hardening … Read more
I’ll never forget the first time I tried to level out a subfloor in my 1920s bungalow.
